Our social action missions abroad are part of our cultural immersion programs designed to serve local communities. The goal is to foster cultural exchange and international cooperation in the areas of community outreach, education, support for people with disabilities, and projects that improve local infrastructure. These projects share a common goal of addressing real needs, and above all, involve working in collaboration with a local team and committed local partners.
Social action programs are open to everyone. A solo traveler can join a team, a group can work on a dedicated project, and a family or a young person can also find their place for a first volunteer experience.
Some missions primarily require a presence and supervision. Others involve more facilitation, day-to-day management, assistance for people facing difficulties (precarious living conditions, disabilities, etc.), or support in organizing activities.
At Freepackers, some of our projects bridge the gap between social and environmental causes. One example is our upcycling program in Lisbon, which aims to transform plastic waste into sports equipment at a neighborhood skatepark with a social mission. You’ll participate in sorting, manufacturing, and awareness campaigns, while interacting with local children. It’s a meaningful project with tangible results. The project thus combines environmental protection with a positive social impact.
In some programs, volunteers work with children or teenagers through games, early learning activities, and creative or sports workshops.
Other projects focus more on supporting people with disabilities, promoting their independence, or assisting with their transition into the workforce.
In these cases, volunteers may assist with daily activities, group sessions, outings, or adapted workshops. The approach is often very personal and requires active listening, patience, and genuine respect for the pace of the people being supported.
Construction projects can also fall under the umbrella of social initiatives, as they address a direct need within communities. In Cambodia, for example, our humanitarian project includes renovating an educational center and creating gardens in an underprivileged neighborhood.
Social sector projects are open to people of all backgrounds. You don’t need prior experience in the social sector to support local teams. The most valuable soft skills are:
In this type of project, technical skills are welcome, but what really matters is a caring attitude, a sense of responsibility, reliability, and the ability to integrate into the local community.
RealStep offers student internships that provide professional experience as part of an academic program. The internship fields are very diverse. As a social work intern, you can work as a doctor, nurse, specialized activity coordinator, or teacher.
During your internship, you’ll work at places such as hospitals (caring for the elderly, people with disabilities, or infants), social service centers, after-school programs, or schools.
These internships provide training for careers in social work, the protection of vulnerable individuals, youth programming, or teaching. Visit our page to see all our internship opportunities in the social sector.
Social work is one of the most rewarding types of service: it involves personal commitment, profound human experiences, and intercultural cooperation. From community outreach and integration to community life and construction projects, these opportunities offer a wide range of possibilities for volunteers who wish to act in accordance with the values of respect, tolerance, and empathy.
The impact of a social project isn’t just about grand statements; it’s about consistent engagement, active listening, and simple actions carried out with dedication, all in the service of people and local communities.
