Volunteer Opportunities in Malawi

About Destination and Volunteer Opportunities

ABOUT MALAWI

Situated in southeastern Africa, Malawi is a landlocked country featuring stunning highlands and captivating lakes. Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa, stands out for its extraordinary clear waters and diverse aquatic life. This vast freshwater lake is one of the largest and deepest lakes in the world and occupies a significant portion of the country’s eastern border.

Referred to as the “Warm Heart of Africa,” Malawi earned this nickname from the friendly nature of its people. Lilongwe is the capital city, located near the centre of Malawi. Although English is the official language, Chichewa (Chewa) is also widely spoken throughout the country.

Malawi’s economy is predominantly agrarian, with agriculture playing a pivotal role. The country struggles with economic challenges, prompting ongoing efforts to foster sustainable development. Despite its abundance of natural resources and scenic beauty, Malawi remains reliant on external aid for support and growth.
