About India

India is a country that occupies the greater part of South Asia and is the second-most populous country in the world. It has one of the oldest civilisations in the world and has a territory extending from snow-covered heights to tropical rainforests. The population of India is incredibly diverse boasting a variety of ethnic groups, languages, religions, etc. Some of the major religions are Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhisk, Muslim and Christian. Over 1,600 languages and dialects are spoken in India. Hindi and English are the official languages, though each state and territory has its own official language as well.

Among the many attractions that India has to offer, you can discover the temples of Mysore and the beaches of Kerala. India will overwhelm you with its beauty and vibrancy with its diverse ecosystems encompassing everything from the Humalayan mountains in the north to tropical rainforests and beaches in the south. It is also home to many endemic plant, animal and bird species. Some of the most iconic animal species found in India include the Bengal tiger, Indian elephant, Indian rhinoceros, Asiatic lion and snow leopard. One notable environmental wonder is The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest mangrove forest in the world.

Despite the incredible biodiversity and the rapidly developing global economy, issues of poverty affecting a large portion of the population continue to persist. India faces many challenges including inequality, environmental degradation and access to healthcare, and education.

Advice before volunteering in india

Although English is an official language of India, learning some basic Hindi phrases or learning some of the local language spoken in the region where you’ll be volunteering would be very useful in connecting with the local communities as well as in showing respect for the local culture.

Be sure to look after your health and safety both before you leave and when you arrive at the project. Check with your doctor and the Pasteur Institute for any recommended vaccines and medications.

Always respect the local culture and keep an open mind. In any volunteer program, it is important to have a flexible, positive attitude. Mentally prepare to be put outside your comfort zone.
