About Destination and Volunteer Opportunities

ABOUT MEXICO

Mexico is a country in southern North America with tropical landscapes, palm trees, white sand, and turquoise water. You can easily be charmed by Mexican culture while immersed in the life of local communities and their environment. Discover the only country with cuisine that made it on the UNESCO World Heritage list! Mexico is also home to Chichen Itzá, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World as well.

Mexico is committed to environmental conservation, and has 67 national parks. The country also boasts diverse wildlife, including the jaguar, monarch butterfly, Mexican axolotl and green sea turtle. This is due to the wide variety of ecosystems found in Mexico, ranging from deserts and mountains to rainforests and tropical beaches.

The capital of Mexico is Mexico City, which is also the largest city in the country. Spanish is the official language of Mexico and the official currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN).

Advice before volunteering in Mexico

Before volunteering in Mexico, remember that due to the tropical environment, you may need vaccinations for diseases like hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and others. Be sure you have any medication you may need during your stay.

Although many of the locals do speak English, particularly in the tourist areas, learning some basic Spanish phrases will definitely enhance your connection with the community.

Mexico has diverse climates, so make sure you know about the weather conditions in the specific region where you’ll be volunteering so that you can pack accordingly.

It will also help to familiarize yourself with the local currency (Mexican Peso) and its exchange rate to your currency.

Is it safe to volunteer in Mexico?

Mexico is generally considered to be a safe volunteer destination, though you should, of course, still exercise caution when in an unfamiliar area.
