About Destination and Volunteer Opportunities

ABOUT THAILAND

Thailand is a country located in Southeast Asia. Located within the tropics, it has diverse ecosystems, including jungles, mountains and its famous beautiful beaches. The islands of Phuket, Koh Samui, and Phi Phi are particularly popular for their beaches. There are also many temples and golden Buddhas throughout the landscape. Thai culture is very rich and is heavily influenced by Buddhism.

The capital of Thailand is Bangkok, though Chiang Mai is also a major city. The official language is Thai.

Thailand is famous for its elephants and has one of the largest populations of domesticated elephants in the world. In recent years there have been increased efforts for elephant conservation and ethical tourism practices.

Thailand also hosts many floating markets, which are not only cultural attractions but can also exemplify the relationship between the local communities and the water-based environments.

Thailand has over 100 national parks. Khao Sok National Park is home to one of the oldest rainforests in the world where many rare species can be found, including the Rafflesia flower.

Advice before volunteering in Thailand

Before volunteering in Thailand it could benefit you to learn a bit about some Thai customs and etiquette. Showing respect for the local culture and being open-minded will certainly improve your connection to the community. Although many people in touristy areas speak English, learning some basic Thai phrases will also be very useful.

Before you come, make sure to confirm the visa requirements from your country to go to Thailand.

This is a country which is very hot and humid to pack clothing accordingly. Also, don’t forget insect repellent and sunscreen!

Always respect the natural beauty of Thailand and support sustainable practices.
