Cultural tour in Thailand: Hua Hin, Chiang Mai or Koh Samui

The tour

This culture week takes you into everyday Thailand rather than the postcard version. You choose your base from three destinations, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai or Koh Samui, and follow a five-day programme, Monday to Friday, run by the local team.

Expect Thai lessons so you can get by from the start, a session on the country’s history, religion and etiquette (including the dos and don’ts), a cooking class, markets, temples and a few breaks by the sea or the water. Depending on where you are, that means the mangroves of Pranburi, the temples of Doi Suthep and Wat Pha Lad, or the early-morning alms offering to monks on Koh Samui.

The week is designed as a first immersion: it helps you find your feet, understand local customs and feel at ease before a longer stay in the country. It suits adults, young travellers and families alike.

Day by day

Day 1 (Monday): welcome and first steps

An introduction to the programme and your fellow travellers, then your first taste of local life. In Hua Hin, a Thai lesson, lunch together and a trip to the market for a SIM card, currency exchange and essentials. In Chiang Mai, an introduction to Thai culture and etiquette, followed by a cooking class and lunch. On Koh Samui, registration, an introduction to Thai culture and an afternoon at Lamai Beach, with stops at local shops for supplies.

Day 2 (Tuesday): nature and culture

In Hua Hin, Pranburi Forest Park and its mangroves, explored by boat, then an afternoon on Sai Noi Beach. In Chiang Mai, a lesson on the country’s history, religion and customs, then a Thai language class. On Koh Samui, the early-morning food offering to monks and an introduction to Buddhist principles, followed by a Thai culture and language class.

Day 3 (Wednesday): caves, umbrellas and waterfalls

In Hua Hin, a 200 m climb on foot to Chicken Drop Cave, then Huay Mongkol Temple and its Buddhist rituals; in the afternoon, Market Village and the souvenir shops. In Chiang Mai, the Umbrella Village, where you paint your own, then a soak in a hot spring pool. On Koh Samui, a workshop to make a coconut-shell keyring, Na Mueang Waterfall, then Chaweng Beach.

Day 4 (Thursday): temples and a group dinner

In Hua Hin, a lesson on Thai history, religion and customs, then a Muay Thai session. In Chiang Mai, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and its views over the city, lunch at a local restaurant, then Wat Pha Lad. On Koh Samui, an elephant sanctuary, then the Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) and the Fisherman’s Village night market. Everywhere, the day ends with the welcome and farewell dinner.

Day 5 (Friday): last day

In Hua Hin, a Thai cooking class, then a free afternoon. In Chiang Mai, the Lanna Folklife Museum and Warorot Market, then Wat Chedi Luang and the night market. On Koh Samui, a Thai cooking class, then time to unwind on quieter Lipa Noi Beach, with transport provided. An end-of-week dinner rounds things off.

Accommodation

You stay in a shared house with the other travellers on the week’s programme.

Meals

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided on each day of the programme, usually eaten together at the house and occasionally at a local restaurant. Three meals a day on weekdays, two at weekends.

Arrival

The team meets you at the airport and takes you to the house. On the Monday, a trip to the market or local shops lets you buy a local SIM card and change money. The return transfer is not included.
