About Namibia

Namibia is a country located on the southwestern coast of Africa. It is known for its epic landscapes. The Namib Desert stretches along the Atlantic coastline with its majestic dunes. It has several protected parks and reserves to celebrate and protect its rich plant and animal life. One notable park is Etosha National Park, home to the Etosha Pan, in the north of the country.

Windhoek is the capital and largest city of Namibia. The official language of Namibia is English, though there are also many commonly spoken indigenous languages such as Oshiwambo, Otjiherero, and Nama. Namibia’s economy relies heavily on agriculture, tourism, and mining mineral resources such as diamonds, uranium and copper.

Before volunteering in Namibia you should familiarize yourself with some of the local customs. Showing respect for the local culture will help you to build a much stronger relationship with the community.

Before leaving, you should also make sure you have the necessary vaccinations and medications for your trip to Namibia. Consider vaccinations for diseases such as hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and malaria.

Namibia is considered to be one of the safer countries in Africa, though you should of course still exercise general caution. Be cautious about drinking unfiltered water, especially in rural areas. Stick to bottled or treated water to avoid waterborne illnesses.
