ABOUT PORTUGAL

Wildlife and nature

Portugal is a European country located on the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula. It is known for its beautiful coastline, its history, its colourful landscapes, and its welcoming population. Portugal has a diverse geography, including mountains, plains, and a long coastline, famous for its dramatic cliffs and beautiful beaches.

Wild species such as the Iberian lynx, wild boar, deer, and various bird species can be found in Portugal, not to mention marine mammals such as dolphins and whales.

Plenty to inspire you to get involved in exciting Freepackers volunteer projects!

Geography and history

The main cities are Lisbon and Porto. Lisbon has a rather hilly topography, which has earned it the nickname “City of Seven Hills”. Meanwhile, Porto is famous for its port wine production. Other popular areas include the beaches of the Algarve and UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Sintra and Évora.

Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in Europe, older than all others except Athens. Today, Portugal is a member of the European Union, NATO, and other major international organisations.

Portugal offers a high quality of life with a relatively affordable cost of living, good healthcare, a low crime rate, and of course, its famously pleasant Mediterranean climate.

WHY PORTUGAL IS A GREAT DESTINATION TO GET INVOLVED

Portugal is considered a developed country, but that does not mean it lacks humanitarian projects. You can volunteer through environmental conservation programmes or take part in projects supporting vulnerable communities.

For example, some of the projects we offer focus on biodiversity, marine conservation, and the preservation of the Iberian wolf.

Portugal is especially interesting for a volunteer project because it combines a reassuring living environment with real field challenges. Portugal has major natural areas that are important to protect for biodiversity, while also being home to essential animal species, both on land and at sea.

So you really have a role to play in our volunteer projects!

VOLUNTEER MISSIONS IN PORTUGAL WITH FREEPACKERS

Most of the volunteer programmes you can find in Portugal are environmental programmes such as clean-up or tree-planting efforts, humanitarian projects such as teaching English and rebuilding houses and farms in the Alentejo region, as well as agricultural and marine projects.

You can join many different projects in Portugal with us, whether it is marine conservation, a surf and ocean protection programme, an equine farm, or more specific formats such as a summer surf and sports camp for teenagers. You can choose from very different experiences depending on your profile, your age, and the type of commitment you are looking for.

This diversity makes Portugal an interesting destination if you want to take part in a project that is both meaningful and accessible.

TIPS BEFORE LEAVING FOR A VOLUNTEER PROJECT IN PORTUGAL

Although English is widely spoken in Portugal, especially in urban and tourist areas, learning some basic Portuguese will improve your experience and help you communicate better with the local community. It also shows general respect for the local culture.

The projects are all very safe, but you should always exercise general caution in an unfamiliar environment and remain vigilant against petty theft.

DO VOLUNTEERS NEED A VISA TO VOLUNTEER IN PORTUGAL?

American and European citizens do not need a visa to volunteer in Portugal. American citizens can stay in Portugal without a special visa for 90 days, while EU citizens are free to stay longer, as the country is part of the Schengen Area. Other nationalities may require a visa, depending on the length of their stay. Check with the Portuguese embassy in your country to learn more about the process.

WHAT IS THE VOLUNTEERING EXPERIENCE LIKE ON SITE?

Our humanitarian programmes in Portugal are very diverse, and the missions vary from one programme to another. You can visit the programme pages, which generally outline the missions, the duration, a sample schedule, and the local conditions.

On site, the missions do not take up the volunteers’ entire day. For example, the marine conservation programme usually lasts between 3 and 5 hours per day, leaving free time for the rest of the day and weekends.

This allows you to combine commitment, discovery of the country, local immersion, and rest. For many volunteers, this balance makes the experience more accessible and more motivating over several weeks.
