Geography and history
The main cities are Lisbon and Porto. Lisbon has a fairly hilly topography, which is why it is nicknamed the “City of Seven Hills”. Meanwhile, Porto is famous for its port wine production. Other popular areas include the beaches of the Algarve and UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Sintra and Évora.
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in Europe, second only to Athens. Today, Portugal is a member of the European Union, NATO, and other major international organizations.
Portugal offers a high quality of life with a relatively affordable cost of living, good healthcare, a low crime rate, and of course, its famously pleasant Mediterranean climate.
Portugal is considered a developed country, but that does not mean there is a lack of humanitarian projects. You can volunteer in environmental conservation programs and take part in work supporting vulnerable communities.
For example, some of the projects we offer focus on biodiversity, marine conservation, and the preservation of the Iberian wolf.
Portugal is a particularly interesting destination for a volunteer project because it combines a reassuring living environment with real on-the-ground challenges. Portugal has major natural areas that are important to protect for biodiversity, as well as essential animal species, both terrestrial and marine.
So you truly have an important role to play in our volunteer projects!
Most volunteer programs you can find in Portugal are environmental programs such as clean-up efforts or tree planting, humanitarian projects such as teaching English and rebuilding houses and farms in the Alentejo region, as well as agricultural and marine projects.
You can join many different projects in Portugal with us, whether it is marine conservation, a surf and ocean protection program, an equine farm, or more specific formats such as a surf and sports summer camp for young people. You can choose from a wide range of experiences depending on your profile, your age, and the type of commitment you are looking for.
This diversity makes Portugal an interesting destination if you want to take part in a project that is both useful and accessible.

Although English is widely spoken in Portugal, especially in urban and tourist areas, learning some basic Portuguese will improve your experience and help you communicate better with the local community. It also shows general respect for the local culture.
All projects are very safe, but you should always exercise general caution in an unfamiliar environment and remain vigilant against petty theft.

American and European citizens do not need a visa to volunteer in Portugal. U.S. citizens can stay in Portugal without a special visa for 90 days, while EU citizens are free to stay longer, as the country is part of the Schengen Area. Other nationalities may require a visa depending on the length of their stay. Check with the Portuguese embassy in your country to learn more about the process.

Our humanitarian programs in Portugal are very diverse, and the missions vary from one program to another. You can consult the program pages, which generally indicate the missions, the duration, a sample schedule, and the local conditions.
On site, the missions do not take up the volunteers’ entire day. For example, the marine conservation program usually lasts between 3 and 5 hours per day, with free time during the rest of the day and on weekends.
This allows you to combine commitment, discovery of the country, local immersion, and rest. For many volunteers, this balance makes the experience more accessible and motivating over several weeks.
