The project
Athens has welcomed many refugees over the last few years due to the disruption of peace in neighboring countries. Also, the capital of Greece has welcomed diverse and unique individuals into its society. Many families have been separated during their movement and many organizations have created various host centers where the beneficiaries are placed until they are reunited with their families.
For this project, due to daily interaction with vulnerable groups, volunteers must respect safety restrictions and privacy measures. Experience in sports and the arts is recommended, but to make sure everyone can take part, training will be provided by the permanent staff of the association.
A project we follow
Projects chosen with care and followed through regular visits on site.
Your role
In this programme, you will visit the local reception center for teenage and young refugees and interact with them informally. Your role will be to provide them with opportunities to express themselves through sports and art, connect with each other and with you, and spend their free time engaging in meaningful activities.
Your tasks in sports activities will be daily training, playing in outdoor fields, and teaching them healthy eating habits. As for the arts activities, this can include musical instruments, photography, drawing, drama classes, or anything else you have to offer and are good at.
A typical week
On arrival, you will be met at Athens airport by our local coordinator, then transferred to your accommodation. You will be given information about the volunteering sites, how the first day will run, etc. From that moment on, you will be fully looked after and supported so that you are trained and ready to start your mission.
On the first day, the coordinator will take you to the volunteering site for your orientation and training.
Accommodation and meals
In Athens, volunteers are housed in hostels with a social or environmental impact: rooms are shared and single-sex. It is also possible to request a single room, subject to availability and an additional fee.
The hostel is located in the heart of the Metaxourgeio district, one metro stop from Omonia Square.
The accommodation is designed to encourage friendliness and exchange between volunteers, with shared spaces including a kitchen and a terrace overlooking the city.
The accommodation has individual lockers, Wi-Fi access, air conditioning and refrigerators.
Meals
3 meals per day are included throughout the duration of the project. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and lactose-free options are available upon request.
Arrival and transfers
With easy access to public transport, you will be ideally placed to explore ancient sites, authentic city life and the vibrant cultural scene of the city.
