Participating in an environmental project means getting involved in an initiative that benefits both the environment and local communities. These projects involve renovation, construction, and environmental conservation efforts. All activities take place in a safe environment and are supervised by trusted NGOs and local organizations.
An environmental work camp, or community service project, is a volunteer program in which volunteers, working alongside local teams, come together to carry out a construction or environmental restoration project.
These projects may include:
Nature projects focus on biodiversity conservation, the restoration of natural areas, the preservation and enhancement of local heritage, or raising awareness about sustainable development.
Participating in nature conservation projects means making a real impact on biodiversity. These projects are often highly educational and allow you to:
Learn new sustainable techniques
Immerse yourself in a new culture, right on the ground
Engage in multicultural exchanges with local communities
Discover the country in an authentic way
Contribute to a concrete and rewarding project
For young people, it’s also an excellent first step into international volunteering. Many Freepackers nature projects are designed for 15- to 18-year-olds, with enhanced support and a safe environment.
During a community-based construction project, as a volunteer, you will participate in tasks that are accessible to everyone:
Our nature projects are particularly well-suited for young people aged 15 to 18 who are looking for a meaningful vacation, new skills, and hands-on group experience. The projects are designed to help young participants understand the purpose of their mission and contribute to tangible results.
Some community-based construction projects can be undertaken as part of a technical or engineering internship with Real Step. This provides an opportunity to gain initial experience in civil engineering and landscape design, to train in an international setting, and to learn unique skills.
Whether in France, Europe, Africa, Asia, or South America, there are various opportunities available depending on your background, availability, and language proficiency.
Available destinations include: France, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Peru, Madagascar, Costa Rica, Portugal, Ecuador, South Africa, the Philippines, Greece, and Argentina.
Depending on the region, you may need to pack other specific items, but the idea is simple: pack light so you can stay comfortable during projects and in your free time.
The duration of environmental projects can vary, but many programs are available for periods ranging from 2 weeks up to 12 or even 24 weeks!
Registration details, what’s included, accommodation, and how each project works are outlined on the program pages.
Some projects are open to minors, while others are reserved for adults. Above all, all projects require motivation, good physical condition, a positive attitude, and a genuine ability to work in a team.
