Animal Protection in Croatia

Animal Protection in Croatia

This program supports the welfare and protection of dogs and cats at a local shelter. Pet shelters play an important role in Croatia due to the large number of abandoned animals. Shelters are often overcrowded, and rely on volunteers to give the animals time and love, to care for them and give them a chance at adoption.

Shelters also aim to raise awareness about animal abandonment, reduce abandonment rates and help find homes for stray dogs.

Volunteer Tasks in the Animal Rescue

Duties vary from day to day, but may include:

  • Help with bathing and brushing dogs.
  • Games and walks. Playing with pets every day is very important to socialize them, keep them fit and entertain them.
  • Take photos and record short videos to create an identity book for each animal to promote its adoption.
  • Improve conditions for animals by taking care of green spaces and participating in small construction projects, such as building dog runs and fences.

At the shelter, there are about 50 dogs, both puppies and adults. They play around us while we prepare a clean and welcoming environment for them. My satisfaction comes from seeing them happy after they’ve eaten, run around, and returned to their clean kennel.
