Construction and community project in South Africa

Get involved in the development of local communities through various construction, education in daycare centers, sports or even IT projects in South Africa and Eswatini.

You can combine projects according to your preferences and the needs on site.

You will be staying in accommodation in the heart of the nature reserve, yet still close to the city. You’ll have the opportunity to regularly interact with a family and their children who take care of the farm and welcome you in a warm and friendly setting.

1. Construction Project

Volunteers in this program can support the construction efforts of local communities.

As a volunteer, you may be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Take inventory of equipment
  • Manage equipment stock
  • Assist with planning and designing construction projects
  • Painting and decoration
  • Demolition
  • Masonry
  • Gardening
  • Installation of drinking water purifiers
  • Assist with all necessary tasks on the construction site

2. Daycare Project

As a volunteer in the childcare project, you will work in Neighbourhood Care Points (NCPs), which are community centers for local children, providing them with a safe environment to grow and thrive while receiving basic education.

You will work with children aged 3 to 6 years old.

You will assist local staff in their daily tasks: teaching, activities, games, and interaction with the children.

Take part in various activities, including:

  • Teaching English and mathematics
  • Marking exercises
  • Leading games and fun, educational, and sports activities
  • Creating activities related to the school curriculum
  • Storytelling and learning through tales
  • Interacting with and supporting the children as much as possible
  • Helping with meal preparation and service
  • Teaching basic life skills such as tooth brushing and hygiene

The activities carried out on site will largely depend on your suggestions to support the children locally.

3. Sports Project for Children

In this project, you will introduce children to a variety of sports activities. The aim is to contribute to the children’s development by stimulating them, strengthening their focus, physical condition, and health, while also building their self-confidence through physical activity.

You will support the sports coordinator on site in setting up a physical education program in several community facilities.

Your role will be to visit each NCP in turn in the morning to engage the children in a variety of fun activities: singing and dancing, ball games, obstacle courses, tricycle games, etc.

Examples of activities you may take part in:

  • Setting up obstacle courses and other fun physical activities
  • Leading stimulating and enjoyable games for children
  • Teaching motor coordination through ball games, for example

In the afternoon, you will generally help children in primary school with their homework. On some days, other activities may be organized, such as an introduction to the local language (Siswati).

Friday afternoons are free, after the weekly meeting with the program coordinator.

IT Classes

In addition to the education projects, you can also take part in teaching IT to children. These classes are part of a digital learning program aimed at introducing young people to essential new technologies.

This part of the program is carried out alongside the other projects available (daycare and sports with children).

Climate in Eswatini

Summer in Eswatini is the opposite of the northern hemisphere: the hottest temperatures are in December, and the coldest in July. Please pack your luggage accordingly. Everything can be useful, from a swimsuit to a hoodie!

From October to March, this is the rainy season with the heaviest rainfall. Be sure to bring a waterproof jacket and suitable shoes for the rain. These are also the hottest months, so pack a swimsuit and light, breathable clothing. Evenings can still be cool, so bring a fleece or a warm layer for the night.

From May to August, it’s winter. This period is generally drier, and temperatures can drop to 1 or 2 degrees. Days can be sunny but remain cool.
