Conservation of lemurs in Madagascar

Conservation of lemurs in Madagascar

Take action now to preserve Madagascar’s biodiversity by joining our French-speaking lemur conservation project in Nosy Be!

Our “Family” projects are suitable for children from the age of 4. Our advisors will provide personalized recommendations based on your child’s age, the destination, and the type of mission.

Project Description

The lemur conservation project aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting lemurs and their habitat.

Due to widespread deforestation, habitat destruction, and poaching, lemur populations in Madagascar are steadily declining. Through habitat restoration, population monitoring, and public awareness campaigns near project sites, the Nosy Be conservation project seeks to address these issues.

Lemurs face an alarming risk of extinction, with 31% classified as critically endangered.

As a volunteer, you will participate in various activities at the sanctuary, including data collection on lemurs and other species, along with regular tasks. You will get close to lemurs as well as other park animals, such as tortoises, crocodiles, chameleons, and other reptiles.

You will also receive guidance on how to identify local flora and contribute to an evolving inventory database on the project site.

Your Role

As a volunteer, you will have a significant impact on conservation efforts in Nosy Be and on the well-being of lemurs living in a controlled environment. Your contribution helps preserve this unique ecosystem and its inhabitants. Before starting your volunteer work, it is essential to understand your role, responsibilities, and expectations.

Your main tasks will include:

  • Assisting in the preparation and feeding of lemurs.
  • Helping with the cleaning of lemur habitats.
  • Providing care for other species residing in the sanctuary.
  • Creating, updating, and tracking the database of lemurs and other sanctuary species (age, sex, reproduction, daily behavior, identification markers, and physical characteristics).
  • Contributing to the flora database at project locations.

With the help of specific data, the park’s veterinarian can determine the appropriate care for each resident. You will also have the opportunity to communicate in English or French to educate visitors about the refuge.

Additionally, you will help develop awareness campaigns aimed at educating the local community about the importance of protecting lemurs and their habitat.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION

The volunteer house, located in Nosy Be, offers various amenities for participants’ comfort. It features a spacious dining area and two lounges—one on the ground floor and another on the first floor—where volunteers can interact. Additionally, a large balcony is available for relaxation, especially appreciated after hours of activities within the project.

There is also a refrigerator that you can use to store your personal food and drinks.

The meal plan includes three meals per day on weekdays and two per day on weekends. Meals served at the house are family-style and vegetarian, featuring a mix of Western and Malagasy dishes, primarily based on rice and vegetables. Kitchen facilities are also available for those who wish to cook, or they can choose to eat at local restaurants at their own expense.

For those with specific dietary preferences, allergies, or dietary restrictions, they have the option to supplement the menu with Western food that suits them better.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Upon arrival, you will participate in an orientation day to familiarize yourself with the local environment and culture.

Your program will continue as usual starting from Tuesday and throughout the rest of the week.

You will work within a French-speaking team with coordinators who speak French, and you will share your daily experience with volunteers from around the world. Proficiency in English is therefore a plus for communication.
