Group travel: school trips and student travel for global citizenship

School trips are organised, supervised trips outside of school where students leave the traditional classroom to gain hands-on experience on a specific topic or subject.

There are different types of school trips, such as:

  • Day trips: these are very common school trips and in the school curriculum. These are short, organised single-day trips within the local community; students and teachers visit local museums, see a theatre show, visit a historical landmark, or go to a nature centre (or a park guided tour).
  • Multiple-day trips: these are longer, immersive trips that involve overnight stays, such as school camps, summer camps, traveling to different regions to explore subjects on history, nature, ecology, or culture.
  • Multiple-day international trips, school trips abroad: these are school age trip programmes in another country, focused on language immersion, global citizenship, sports, STEM, conservation, community projects.

What is a service learning project?

A service learning project is a project that combines academic work and community service. Integrating service into the curriculum is an opportunity for students to bring global issues they cover in textbooks, such as environmental impact, into a real-life context.

How is service learning different from volunteering?

It focuses on academic learning as well, which means the service goal is in the curriculum, it is academically assessed (graded).

What are CAS projects?

CAS stands for Creativity, Activity, and Service, and these three pillars (Creativity, Activity, and Service) are actually a framework that is a mandatory part of the IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma Programme. CAS is an 18-month programme and what is important about these three pillars is to get students out of classrooms, screens, textbooks and into the world.

More on the three core pillars:

  • Creativity: it is about creative thinking and expression. Programmes can involve learning an instrument, creating a website, a short film, cooking food, making music.
  • Activity: is about getting moving, getting to know your body through movement, developing the habit of daily movement. Programmes can involve team sports (football, rugby), hiking, swimming, training for running, taking dancing classes.
  • Service: is about experiencing impact and meaning behind voluntary work in the community. Programmes can include clean-up projects, volunteering at an animal shelter.

More on IB Diploma Programme:

  • The International Baccalaureate® (IB) offers a continuum of international education through four educational programmes to students aged 3 to 19.
  • One of the four programmes is The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. A two-year educational programme aimed at 16 to 19 year-olds in 140 countries around the world.
  • The programme provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education and is recognised by many universities worldwide.
  • The International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) is a nonprofit foundation headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

What are CAS trips?

A) CAS trips are organized trips that provide International Baccalaureate (IB) students with an impactful way to fulfill Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) requirements, all while developing global citizenship skills, among others.

B) CAS school trips can be organized trips whose programmes are inspired by the International Baccalaureate (IB) core framework of Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS).

CAS trips must involve:

  • creative thinking,
  • physical exertion,
  • or voluntary community help.

But are also built around the frameworks and goals:

  • UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Sustainable travel.

What is educational travel abroad?

Educational travel abroad, or learning travel abroad, is organised travel to another country with the primary purpose of learning, meaning that travel has an educational goal or goals, rather than only, for example, leisure activities.

This type of travel enables participants to gain knowledge, develop skills, and deepen cultural understanding at the source in a planned, real-world setting in another country.

Frequently asked questions

What is responsible tourism?

Responsible tourism is about making travel better for everyone involved. That includes local communities, the environment, and travelers themselves. It’s not just about where you go and the next photo-op. It’s about minimizing negative impacts, maximizing positive contributions to local communities, respecting local cultures and ecosystems, and supporting sustainable, locally led initiatives that continue even after you leave.

What types of teen summer camps are there?

Popular teen summer camps include adventure camps, surf camps, marine conservation projects, sports camps, language immersion programmes, wildlife conservation, volunteering, and cultural exchange experiences.

What is experiential travel?

Experiential travel is a type of travel focused on immersive activities in a destination, in comparison to sightseeing, crossing landmarks or countries off a list. The goal is to connect with local communities, culture, food, traditions, nature, or daily life. Almost as if a small travel group is taking the role of anthropologists! The goal is travel that gives more meaning, experience, and connection.

Experiential travel is characterized by:

  • Sustainable and community driven trips
  • Small travel groups
  • Active adventure
  • Activities such as: tea ceremonies, safari tours, food making, language learning
  • Responsible tourism
  • The journey rather than the destination

What is impactful travel?

Impactful travel is travel that considers the impact of travel consciously. This type of travel aims to create a positive effect on the places and people visited. The idea is to leave a destination better than prior to the visit. This type of travel is eco-conscious (responsible travel, being mindful about the environment) and includes activities that support local people directly (engaging with locally owned businesses).
