Sustainable farming in the Azores

Sustainable farming in the Azores

This program is eligible for Erasmus+ funding. Affiliated educational institutions can submit an application using the Erasmus+ ID for Freepackers: E10393852.

Discover the beauty of São Miguel Island in the Azores while helping local organizations take care of gardens, nurseries, and develop craft activities. This sustainable agriculture program offers volunteers the opportunity to work on farms and agricultural spaces on São Miguel Island, supporting responsible and inclusive farming practices.

Program Description

Volunteers work with people with disabilities and other groups facing barriers to employment. Activities include planting, watering, gardening, and other farming tasks. This hands-on project emphasizes social inclusion, sustainability, and respect for nature, while promoting direct contact with the environment.

Your Tasks

During the program, you will take part in the following tasks:

  • Planting, weeding, watering, maintaining gardens, and harvesting fruits and vegetables
  • Creating new items from recycled materials
  • Helping during events and with the sale of craft and food products

Volunteers mainly work outdoors for 5 to 6 hours a day, which requires good physical condition.

Optionally, it is also possible to work in the shop selling the farm’s produce. A good level of English is useful for this part.
