Alexandrine’s experience with sea turtles in Greece
Animal humanitarian trip with sea turtles
Alexandrine got involved with sea turtles in Greece, and shares her experience from her animal humanitarian trip!
WHAT THIS EXPERIENCE BROUGHT ME…
These two weeks on the island of Kefalonia in Greece were without a doubt some of the best of my life.
I had a great first experience volunteering with the Wildlife Sense organization, helping protect sea turtles. I learned a lot about turtle conservation, current challenges, and what we can do on our scale to help them.
The tasks were varied and rewarding, and I truly felt useful. Bonus: I met inspiring people from all over Europe, and had plenty of free time to explore the island!
MY BEST MEMORIES…
The first time I helped a baby turtle reach the sea, the night when my team and I managed a mass hatching event on the beach (over 70 baby turtles born in 15 minutes!), and cliff jumping into turquoise waters with my friends on our days off.

IF I HAD TO RATE THE SERVICES FROM 1 TO 5…
- Pre-departure information: 5/5
- Registration process: 5/5
- Project supervision / coordinators: 5/5
- Volunteer schedule: 4/5 – I had a lot of free time; I think a few more tasks or one less day off would have been beneficial.
- Meals and accommodation: 4/5
WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS PROJECT?
100%!!! Whether you’re looking for a first experience in animal volunteering or wanting to deepen your knowledge of sea turtle conservation.
… AND FREEPACKERS?
Yes, I had a very good experience with Freepackers. I felt supported from the beginning to the end of my project, and the team was always very responsive in answering my questions.
