Aliénor in Sri Lanka: An environmental project and a sea turtle protection project

WHAT WERE THE TASKS ASSIGNED ON SITE?

During my volunteering in Sri Lanka, I had the opportunity to take part in two missions: the protection of sea turtles and an environmental project.

As part of the turtle protection project, my tasks included cleaning the turtles’ shells and their tanks, securing the eggs, and removing the empty shells from previous clutches. I also helped to feed the turtles, carry buckets of water, and I was lucky to release baby turtles into the ocean — an unforgettable moment!

For the environmental project, I planted mangroves and participated in beach cleanups; essential actions to preserve the local ecosystem.

WHAT THIS EXPERIENCE BROUGHT ME…

This experience taught me to be more resourceful and gave me the feeling of being truly useful, especially through the environmental projects. I participated in an unforgettable adventure that helped all of us grow, both personally and in our abilities to work with others.

Living and working together, we also improved our English by communicating and helping each other daily. This trip left me with incredible memories and many anecdotes that I will cherish forever!

WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS PROJECT?

I recommend this project, especially for the environmental work, which made me feel truly useful. However, for the tasks related to turtles, it is important to note that the work can be somewhat physical. For example, the buckets are quite heavy, and many of us experienced back pain or blisters on our hands because the equipment is made with local materials, which can sometimes make the work more demanding. That said, the contact with the turtles remains a magical moment that quickly makes you forget these small challenges.

WOULD I RECOMMEND FREEPACKERS?

Yes, I highly recommend Freepackers. The service is very fast, and you feel reassured throughout the process. There is real support, and the missions offered are very varied, allowing you to have a rich and diverse experience.
