The project

This humanitarian project in Asia consists of teaching local children at a school in the village of Tigman, Aborlan, Palawan, to help them improve their English.

“Family” projects are suitable for children aged 4 and up. Our advisors will provide personalized recommendations based on your children’s age, the destination, and the type of mission.

This programme will give you an insight into the education system in the Philippines, and specifically in Palawan. You’ll teach English to children in a fun and practical way, and in doing so you’ll be working hand in hand with this beautiful community!

When you register for the project, you can choose whether you want to take part in the programme in nursery schools (3-6 year-olds) or primary schools (7-12 year-olds).

It is also possible to combine the two projects: you will spend 2 hours in the morning in nursery schools and 3 hours in the afternoon in primary schools. This combination will enable you to take part in the project for 5 to 6 hours a day.

Types of assignments in schools

This programme aims to offer comprehensive assistance, whether by allowing the children to hear English pronunciation from native English speakers or by providing additional support in other academic subjects. The main aim is for you to leave a positive mark on the children’s lives, as well as encouraging multicultural learning and exchange.

Your main roles will be as follows:

  • Teaching English alongside local teachers.
  • Preparing and organising meaningful lessons and learning activities with the local programme coordinator and local teachers.
  • Facilitating learning activities such as fun games, art, songs, dances, grammar and conversation exercises, sport and other related activities.
  • Taking part in other activities organised by the school.
  • Preparing assessment exercises.
  • Grading the assessment exercises
  • Grading monthly exams or assessments.

The teaching programme allows you to organise a variety of activities such as music, songs, games, art, sports, conversation and grammar exercises. You can also teach maths and science subjects.

The school’s pupils are always very curious and enthusiastic about learning more about your family, your country, your culture and your way of life. That’s why we strongly encourage you to bring photos of your home, as the children will really appreciate them!

Accommodation and meals

You’ll be staying in the volunteers’ house, which is built from a wealth of natural materials to give it a tropical beach feel! You’ll sleep in bunk beds.

The accommodation is located in the heart of the village of Tigman, in the district of Aborlan, a charming and peaceful area. It is about 72 kilometres from Puerto Princesa, a two-hour drive, and 20 minutes from Aborlan town centre. Ideally located near the beach, it gives you the opportunity to relax and swim during your free time.

Meals

Three good meals are provided each day at 8am for breakfast, 12pm for lunch and 6pm for dinner, and at weekends only brunch and dinner.

The food will consist mainly of typical local and Western dishes. There will also be pasta, seafood, mostly chicken and pork, vegetables and fruit. For breakfast, we serve eggs, sausages, oatmeal, bread, pancakes, coffee and tea. Meals are also served according to your dietary requirements.

Arrival and transfers

There are many means of local transport available, including jeepneys, buses and vans, which leave hourly for either Aborlan town or Narra. The journey to Aborlan town centre takes around twenty minutes, and thirty minutes to Narra.
