The project

“Family” projects are suitable for children aged 4 and up. Our advisors will provide personalized recommendations based on your children’s age, the destination, and the type of mission.

Become a volunteer teacher and share your English knowledge at local village schools in Kenya. Get to know the children and broaden your horizons together! Both students and teachers will greatly appreciate your contribution. As you will be immersed in the school, the community and the culture, this project is rewarding on both a personal and a professional level.

Kenyan children, especially those in rural areas, rarely have the opportunity to meet and interact with people from outside their village. Most of them don’t even have the chance to practice English outside of school, even though it is one of the official languages of Kenya. Simply talking with them in correct English can help them learn and improve.

You will be placed in one of two local schools in the community. You will participate in the project from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the option to stay until 5 p.m. if you wish. Your assignment will depend on the community’s needs, availability at that time, and, to the extent possible, your preferences. Keep in mind that you may be responsible for some lesson planning tasks for the class where you assist the teacher. This can be done informally, giving you the freedom to be creative in classes, sports, games, gardening, and singing. If you have objects or photos that can help you share unique facts or traditions, it could be an excellent lesson to offer as part of this humanitarian teaching mission.

Please note that during long vacation periods when schools are closed, an English and sports programme similar to a “day camp” may be organized for local children, and it will be managed by the participants with the assistance of our coordinators.

It is possible to combine this project with the wildlife project in Kenya.

Accommodation and meals

You will be accommodated in the volunteer house. Participants are expected to respect the environment and use all resources sparingly, especially electricity. There are occasional power cuts during the day, but don’t panic. That’s village life. The water supply is always assured. You’ll have all the essentials at your disposal during your stay.

Meals are provided daily and rooms are cleaned at weekends, but you will also be expected to clean up after yourself and contribute to the order and cleanliness of the accommodation. The establishment is located close to the school. It is about 15 km from Nakuru town.

The atmosphere is warm and family-like: all volunteers stay in a large house with common areas where everyone eats together, relaxes, reads, plays games, etc. The house hosts a maximum of 25 volunteers.

Arrival and transfers

Airport pick-up (on Sunday before 1 p.m.) and transfer to the project are included. Local transport for excursions will be the responsibility of participants.

Free time and activities

There are plenty of places to visit in your free time. For example, you can visit Thompson Falls in Nyahururu, hike the Hyrax Hills, hike Menengai Crater, check out the equator at Gwakung’u, visit Lake Nakuru National Park and Lake Naivasha.

Can you join a project as a family?

Yes. For families who want to travel together, we offer programmes designed to welcome children from the age of 4, 10 or 15 depending on the project. Our programme pages say whether they are open to families; otherwise, contact our team to find out more.
