Zanzibar road trip tour
Three weeks around Zanzibar: the lanes of Stone Town, the giant tortoises of Prison Island, east coast spice farms, dolphins, the beaches of Nungwi and a local project.
The tour
This road trip takes in all of Zanzibar: its history, beaches, nature and food. It begins in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its narrow lanes and rooftop views over the Indian Ocean, then heads out by traditional wooden boat to Prison Island, or Changuu Island, home to giant tortoises.
The trip then follows the east coast, with its spice farms, a home-cooked spiced lunch and the village of Makunduchi, before heading back out to sea: a boat trip to see dolphins, snorkelling near The Rock and the beaches of Nungwi. A sunset cruise and a cycling trip complete the route.
Part of the stay is spent on a local project in education, childcare or construction, working alongside local people. The tour suits adults, young travellers and families who want to know the island beyond its beaches, travelling at its own pace.

A tour of rural spice farms to learn about Zanzibar’s spice heritage, followed by a home-cooked spiced lunch. A visit to the village of Makunduchi.
Dolphins, The Rock and Nungwi
A boat trip to see dolphins, snorkelling near The Rock, then time to unwind on the beaches of Nungwi. A sunset cruise and a cycling trip.
