Wildlife Sanctuary near Johannesburg

Program description

Experience the adventure of a lifetime with this educational project that offers the opportunity to embark on a young humanitarian mission and get up close and personal with wild animals in South Africa.

Located in Hartebeespoort (just 45 minutes from Johannesburg), this 1000-hectare private reserve serves as a sanctuary for orphaned or injured animals. Founded 25 years ago to save a baby elephant whose parents were brutally slaughtered, the reserve has since gained a reputation throughout the region for its outstanding conservation efforts.

Volunteer's Daily Mission on the farm

As a volunteer, you will:

-accompany the elephant caregivers for their daily baths

-live in the heart of the sanctuary

-actively participate in animal care and environmental maintenance

-Join in on patrols to check the anti-poaching fences

-feed the animals alongside their caregivers

-maintain roads,control erosion

-clean bushes while checking for unfamiliar and harmful plants.

While the farm can host up to 50 volunteers during peak season, groups are formed to accompany caregivers in their daily tasks. After a fulfilling day, join in on social activities at the bar/restaurant. For a small additional cost, take part in a range of sports activities and excursions offered on weekends - yet another reason to embark on this young humanitarian mission.
