The project
Looking for a meaningful holiday and a different way to discover Barcelona? This solidarity summer camp in Spain invites teenagers aged 14 to 18 to spend two weeks combining community work, a host family stay and cultural discoveries.
The project is available all year round, with arrivals every Saturday.
Based in the Nou Barris neighbourhood, the teens join the NGO’s projects alongside the local coordinators. A food bank, time spent with older people, creative workshops and sustainable initiatives give solidarity a tangible meaning. The host family and the programme team support participants in their activities and when getting around.

Why the project exists
In Barcelona, our partner NGO runs social inclusion and mutual aid projects in the neighbourhood. Its work strengthens ties between residents, access to food and participation in local life. The young volunteers reinforce these initiatives and discover what solidarity means day to day.
A project we follow
Projects chosen with care and followed through regular visits on site.
Your role
Varied, supervised solidarity tasks
- Food bank: helping to sort donations, organise stock and distribute food to families, with the local team.
- Intergenerational meetings: sharing conversations, creative activities, music and accompanied walks with older residents.
- Art and neighbourhood life: contributing to a group project, for example a mural or a creative workshop.
- Sustainable development: discovering local initiatives and taking part in activities around permaculture and urban farming.
- Summer activities with children: assisting the coordinators with games, workshops and educational outings, depending on the season.
Tasks are allocated according to current needs and are carried out under the responsibility of the coordinators. The teenagers support local professionals and volunteers with the tasks they are given.
A typical week
Two weeks of commitment and discovery
Welcome: arrival on Saturday at Barcelona-El Prat, settling in with the host family and meeting the other participants. Monday is devoted to orientation, safety guidelines and getting to know the neighbourhood.
First week: introduction to the food bank, activities with children in summer, an art project and meetings with older people. Conversation workshops and review sessions complete the tasks.
Weekend: guided visits of Barcelona and its historic centre, discovering Gaudí’s architecture and an outing to Barceloneta. The family prepares a picnic for the excursions.
Second week: continuing the projects, preparing a closing group event and reviewing skills with the tutors. The end of the stay includes a certificate ceremony, farewells and the return transfer to the airport on Saturday.
This schedule is indicative. The order of activities may change depending on the season, the weather and the organisation’s needs.
Accommodation and meals
A host family stay in Barcelona
Participants are accommodated in the Nou Barris neighbourhood. Most flats host two or three young people. Each teenager is placed with at least one other international participant of the same gender and a similar age.
The family supports daily life and getting around. Shared meals and moments are a chance to discover local customs and practise Spanish in a friendly setting.
Meals
Meals are included throughout the stay. The family prepares breakfast, dinner and snacks. From Monday to Friday, lunch is served at the project site by the kitchen team.
For weekend outings, the family provides a packed meal. Let Freepackers know about any dietary requirements before registering so we can check they can be catered for.
Supervision
Daily support for teenagers
The host family and the team provide on-site support 24/7. The young people are accompanied on their journeys, during activities and on weekend excursions. They do not have to travel around Barcelona on their own.
On arrival, an orientation session explains how the stay works, the house rules and the safety guidelines. The coordinators oversee the solidarity activities and hold review sessions.
Arrival and transfers
The host family provides pick-up at Barcelona-El Prat airport (BCN), then the return transfer at the end of the stay. The programme details indicate a journey of around 30 minutes between the airport and the accommodation, depending on traffic.
A public transport card is provided and included. Journeys around the city are made with a member of the family or the programme team.
Free time and activities
The programme includes accompanied outings to discover Barcelona: the historic centre, sites linked to Gaudí and some time to relax at Barceloneta. Evenings are spent mostly with the family, over conversations, games and rest.
The visits mentioned are indicative. Any entry tickets to monuments and additional activities must be confirmed before departure.
The region
The stay takes place in Barcelona, Spain, with accommodation in Nou Barris. This base offers a chance to experience neighbourhood life and take part in local initiatives, while exploring the city on supervised outings.
