Cultural tour in Bali

A week in Ubud getting to know Balinese culture: language lessons, batik, cooking, traditional dance, and a flower offering you make yourself and take to Tirta Empul temple.

The tour

Bali is known for the richness of its arts, from painting and carving to handicrafts, and for a ritual life that still shapes every day. This week, based in Ubud and the surrounding area, lets you see that culture from the inside, alongside the people who keep it alive.

Day by day you learn the basics of the Balinese language, walk through rice terraces and craft villages, try your hand at batik painting and Balinese cooking, and watch a traditional dance show. On the last day you make a flower offering and take it to Tirta Empul temple, where you can also bathe in the holy water.

It suits curious travellers, on their own, with friends or as a family, who want to understand Bali before exploring it, and anyone about to stay on for longer.

Day by day

Monday: First steps in Ubud

An introduction to Balinese traditions and culture, then a walking tour of Monkey Street and Ubud market. In the afternoon, a Balinese culture class. Early dinner, then a traditional dance show.

Tuesday: Language and villages

Balinese language class in the morning. In the afternoon, a village walk taking in rice terraces, an art village and the hills.

Wednesday: Batik painting

A second language class in the morning, then a batik painting workshop in the afternoon.

Thursday: Cooking and offerings

A Balinese cooking class in the morning, then a flower offering workshop. In the evening, a welcome and farewell dinner.

Friday: Tirta Empul

A visit to Tirta Empul, the holy water temple, where you present your offering and can bathe in the sacred water. Lunch, then a project meeting for those staying on for a volunteering placement.

The programme may change depending on the weather and local conditions.

Accommodation

Accommodation in a shared house in Ubud, where most meals are also served.

Meals

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included every day from Monday to Friday.

Arrival

Airport pick-up and transfer to the accommodation are included; the return transfer is not. The programme starts on Monday morning.
