This summer youth programme welcomes young travellers interested in discovering the Irish culture. Get involved in a community project while learning about the environment and climate action. Explore the natural wonders as well as the local culture and heritages of Ireland with included excursions and visits!
Volunteers will be immersed in Irish culture and the English language. They will be supported by local NGO coordinators and participate in eco-volunteer projects with other local and international volunteers. The programme also includes educational activities as well as trips.
Bees are threatened with extinction in Ireland. This decline is due to the lack of food and safe nesting sites. Based in Cork City, your group will work with local organisations to create green spaces in the city and encourage biodiversity and bee-friendly environments. You will also have the opportunity to visit a beekeeping project and gain further knowledge. Participants will be expected to carry out mainly field tasks, such as removing invasive plants and planting bee-friendly species. The assignments are 4-6 hours per day.
Day 1: You will arrive at the Dublin International Airport (arrivals before 3pm) , where you will find your chaperone with whom you will be transferred to Cork. Alternatively, you can arrive directly at the Cork airport.
Day 2: The morning is reserved for orientation to prepare you for the various environmental group missions that begin in the afternoon! In the evening, visit the rooftop beehives in the city centre where urban bees manage to collect pollen and produce honey!
Day 3: The morning is, again, dedicated to environmental missions, and in the afternoon meet locals and discover Gaelic games.
Day 4: After a morning on environmental tasks, you leave for the afternoon to Spike Island, home to a 6th century monastery or even a British fortress!
Day 5: You accompany experienced honey producers from a nearby town in the morning. The afternoon is set aside for beach cleaning with local youths. A typical dinner is planned before returning to Cork.
Day 6: Departure
Day 6: Depart Cork by train for Killarney, a national park with UNESCO biosphere reserve status. You will participate in ecological activities with the reserve’s rangers.
Day 7: Participate in an environmental mission in the morning, and meet up with young climate activists in the afternoon to participate in a discussion. In the evening, you enjoy a nice barbecue!
Day 8: departure for Co Meath! Meet an Irish family on the road for an immersive experience. Continue to Slane and check in at the accommodation The Slane Farm Hostel, located in the grounds of a working dairy farm. The place was refurbished to a coach house and stables that once belonged to Slane Castle.
Day 9: Enjoy a nice, morning hike up Slane Hill, overlooking the countryside, before joining youth climate activists in the afternoon.
Day 10: Day in Dublin!
Day 11: Full day trip to the north coast, including the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Day 12: Broaden your knowledge at a local ecological centre that promotes ecological awareness and sustainability. There will be free time in the afternoon and time to pack in the evening.
