Ethical tourism: traveling while making a real contribution to the places you visit

Definition of ethical tourism: a different approach to travel

Ethical tourism is based on a simple yet essential idea: travel should benefit visitors as much as it does local communities.

This approach to travel aims to rebalance the relationships between travelers, tourism stakeholders, and communities, so that economic, social, and environmental benefits are truly shared. It is fully aligned with an ethical vacation approach that serves as a catalyst for sustainable local development.

Fair and responsible tourism: what are its core principles?

Fair and responsible tourism is based on several pillars:

  • A fair distribution of the economic resources generated by travel
  • Respect for local cultures, traditions, and ways of life
  • The direct involvement of local stakeholders and NGOs on the ground
  • Transparency regarding the use of funds
  • Projects designed to meet real needs

This type of travel is not merely about exploration; it is designed to have a positive and measurable impact. By choosing Planeta First, you’re taking part in itineraries that make a tangible difference for local communities and the environment. You’ll travel with a sense of purpose, truly immersing yourself in the country.

Why Choose Ethical Tourism?

Opting for an ethical vacation allows you to travel in a more engaged and responsible way, by directly supporting the local economy and contributing to social, educational, or environmental projects that make a real difference on the ground.

This approach to travel fosters more authentic experiences, based on encounters and cultural exchange, while allowing travelers to act in alignment with their values. In this way, you become a conscious participant whose presence makes a tangible contribution to the development and well-being of the region you visit.

Ethical tourism: examples and destinations

Your ethical trip to Madagascar

Among our many itineraries, we offer a Cultural Tour of Madagascar that focuses on exploring the country, its traditions, and its culture, as well as interacting with local communities.

The goal is to foster an authentic immersion by involving travelers in projects that offer significant added value. For example, you’ll have the opportunity to visit a lemur sanctuary.

You can also explore the country through:

  • Introductory courses in the local language
  • Malagasy cooking workshops
  • Traditional dance performances
  • Visits to places such as local markets and towns
  • Fishing trips with local fishermen, offering insight into traditional practices and local issues

Ethical travel in Vietnam: a blend of culture, adventure, and solidarity

Our 21-day road trip through Vietnam combines exploration, adventure, and community service.

Enjoy the following activities:

  • Outdoor activities such as kayaking and scuba diving
  • Balanced downtime
  • Visits to major historical and cultural sites
  • Participation in a volunteer project at a community restaurant

The goal of this ethical tourism project is to provide quality meals to people in need. Participants help with various tasks, such as preparing and serving meals. This is where the concept of fair and socially responsible travel truly comes into its own, combining exploration of the country with concrete action.

Concrete Initiatives Carried Out by Our Partner NGOs

Our suggested itineraries are developed in collaboration with NGOs whose initiatives are tangible, measurable, and sustainable. To give you an idea of the significance and commitment behind our projects, we have summarized several concrete initiatives from their annual impact reports.

Two of our partner NGOs, active in several African countries and Argentina, carried out major initiatives over the past year in the fields of social action, education, scientific research, and conservation. These concrete results ensure that you’ll embark on fair-trade trips that are truly meaningful and yield measurable outcomes.

Their activities include, in particular:

  • 240 research dives and 54 boat trips
  • Monitoring of whale sharks and manta rays (42 individuals identified)
  • Studies on reef health and the presence of microplastics
  • Raising awareness among more than 100 young people through educational activities, beach cleanups, and marine safaris
  • Installing solar panels in several centers, improving access to electricity and IT, and enhancing infrastructure reliability

In Argentina, a partner NGO also carried out concrete social initiatives:

  • Organization of artistic, sports, and recreational activities for over 200 children
  • Medical support provided to over 70 patients
  • Deployment of volunteer nurses to assist local teams
  • Planting of 30 fruit trees in local schools
