Flavie’s animal humanitarian travel experience, volunteering at the dog shelter in Sri Lanka!
I wanted to share my feelings since arriving in Sri Lanka two weeks ago, where I am currently volunteering at a shelter that cares for abandoned, injured, and disabled dogs. My experience so far has been full of emotions and encounters, and I am happy to share it.
First of all, I want to emphasize that I was warmly welcomed and well integrated by the other volunteers and the staff at the volunteer house. They were very helpful in guiding me and familiarizing me with the activities and tasks related to our shared mission. Their support and friendship truly contributed to making my stay pleasant and helped me integrate quickly.
I have also developed a deep love for this country. Sri Lanka is an absolutely beautiful destination, with incredible landscapes, rich culture, and warm people. I had the opportunity to discover some local wonders and take part in traditional festivities. Every day, I am amazed by the beauty and diversity this country has to offer.

As a volunteer working with the dogs, I am fulfilled by my work. It is a rewarding experience to be able to support these animals who have been abandoned or have faced serious difficulties. Although it requires a strong heart, as it is sometimes very hard to see dogs in critical condition, I am motivated by the fact that I can make a real difference in their lives. Every small improvement or sign of progress fills me with hope and satisfaction.
The encounters I have made so far have also helped make my experience unforgettable. The locals are extremely welcoming and generous. They opened the doors of their community to me and made me feel at home. I was able to learn more about their culture, traditions, and way of life. These exchanges have enriched my worldview and strengthened my desire to continue helping others, no matter the challenges I may face.
During my stay, there were many German volunteers, and unfortunately, it was quite difficult for me to fully integrate with them. The language barrier and cultural differences created communication and interaction challenges. However, I see this as a personal challenge that helps me strengthen my adaptability and tolerance toward others. Despite this, I am grateful to have the opportunity to meet other international volunteers, which has allowed me to build strong connections and share unique experiences.
In conclusion, I am extremely grateful to be living this animal humanitarian travel experience in Sri Lanka as a volunteer.
