WHAT THIS EXPERIENCE BROUGHT ME…
The project allowed me to improve my English and to learn a lot about reptiles and koalas. It also helped me become more open-minded.
WHAT WERE THE TASKS ASSIGNED ON SITE?
My project lasted 4 weeks, and each week brought a new routine. The first week, I was with the birds. My task was to take the birds out of their cages to present them to visitors during the “Breakfast with the Birds” activity. My duties also included cleaning the cages, preparing food, and creating intellectual games (enrichments) to prevent the birds from getting bored. At the end of the day, I put the birds back in their cages.
The following week, I worked with the mammals. I cleaned the cages, prepared the food, collected eucalyptus for the koalas, cleaned their enclosures, and did the dishes. Then, I was assigned to two other routines: the nursery and reptiles.
Although we did not spend much direct time with the animals, most of our work involved cleaning, assisting visitors, and preparing food. This project helped me understand the importance of support tasks essential for the well-being of the animals and the smooth operation of the center.
DO I RECOMMEND THIS MISSION?
Yes, it was a wonderful experience. The caretakers are passionate, which makes it fascinating. I was very welcome by the people at the refuge. It was a unique opportunity to be close to crocodiles, kangaroos, and koalas.
… AND FREEPACKERS?
Yes, Freepackers is a very reliable organization. I left for Australia very quickly, and they helped me organize this project in less than a month. They are very responsive and efficient!
