Sustainable Tourism Organization in Sri Lanka: Turtle Protection

Aude shares with us the “best decision of her life”: volunteering for sea turtle protection in Sri Lanka!

WHAT THIS EXPERIENCE BROUGHT ME…

Getting involved with an organization and practicing sustainable tourism here in Sri Lanka allowed me to discover a beautiful region and live a true adventure in great company. I had already traveled abroad alone before, but contributing my help on this trip was surely the best decision of my life.

MY BEST MEMORIES…

Each day brings new memories, each more beautiful than the last, but I especially loved eating with the locals, seeing the elephants on the road to Yala National Park, and the release of baby turtles into the sea while watching the sunset.

IF I HAD TO RATE THE SERVICES FROM 1 TO 5…

  • Pre-departure information: 5/5

I was in contact with Anaëlle who answered absolutely all my questions before departure. Always available and thorough in her information.

  • Registration process: 5/5

Very simple and quick, nothing to complain about.

  • On-site supervision / project coordinators: 5/5

The supervision on site was perfect! All members of the volunteer house are attentive and help us in all situations. A coordinator accompanies us each day of the project, ensuring smooth volunteering. They are all really lovely.

  • Volunteer schedule: 4/5

I found the schedule very well organized; we worked half-days on weekdays, which left plenty of free time to explore the country. Unfortunately, for me, it rained a lot during the weekends, which prevented me from discovering more distant regions. I recommend bringing a book or a small card game to keep busy indoors, because when it rains, there isn’t much to do.

  • Meals and accommodation: 3/5

The meals are varied and there are always several options. The kitchen staff adapt dishes for those less used to spicy food, but it’s still a bit too spicy for me :’) The monthly barbecue is really nice; they put a lot of effort into making us happy.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS PROJECT?

Obviously, I recommend experiencing this because it offers exceptional peace of mind. It’s an opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause while making new friends.

… AND FREEPACKERS?

I recommend Freepackers if you want to travel without worrying about the sometimes stressful organization. You will always be in good hands.
