Summer Camps: Protection of Sea Turtles in Greece.

Summer Camps: Protection of Sea Turtles in Greece.

This project has been specially designed for individuals aged 15 to 17 who are interested in learning about responsible tourism. Throughout this project in sustainable tourism, volunteers will benefit from supervision and training provided by international experts selected for their experience and ability to mentor and motivate young adults.

Based in Giannitsochori, you will live with an international team of volunteers and staff members. You will work towards the protection and conservation of one of the most important nesting areas for loggerhead turtles in Greece.

The team will conduct daily surveys in the morning and evening (according to nesting activity) to record turtle activity, protect nests from mammal predation and flooding by seawater. Volunteers will also provide important conservation information to foreign visitors and the local community. You will also have a free weekend to enjoy cultural activities in a beautiful region of Greece known for its mythological history of heroes and their quests.

All our programs have short, medium, and long-term goals that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Your Accommodation

Volunteers are accommodated in shared tents at the campsite, allowing you to be in the heart of the action and meet new interesting people who also appreciate the beauty of the Greek coastline.

The base provides common areas such as a billiard table, ping-pong table, and foosball table, as well as a small supermarket, self-service restaurant, and a small shop for purchasing drinks.

All participants share camp duties (cooking, cleaning, etc.), and the camp is located a 15-minute walk from the town of Giannitsochori.

Additional Information

Meals

From Monday to Thursday, volunteers take turns preparing meals for the group, providing an ideal opportunity to refresh your culinary skills! Due to different schedules, each participant typically prepares their own breakfast, and for lunch, it is common to make sandwiches with salad and fruit salad. Dinner usually consists of a combination of healthy and diverse Mediterranean local products. However, on Friday evenings, we usually enjoy traditional Greek dishes at the campsite taverna, giving us the chance to taste some of Greece’s most famous dishes and mezze. During the weekends, there are numerous cafes and restaurants in the area where you are free to have additional meals at your own expense.

Communication

You will have limited access to long-distance communications during the program, so make sure your friends and family know how often they can expect to hear from you. Participants usually use the camp’s WiFi to stay in touch, but please note that the WiFi at the campsite can be slow due to shared usage. Mobile phone reception is quite good, so you can purchase a Greek SIM card in Kyparissia to use with your unlocked mobile phone.
