Mangrove conservation in Madagascar

Mangrove conservation in Madagascar

Join our French-speaking project to preserve the mangroves of Nosy-Be, to safeguard a vital ecosystem and inspire sustainable change!

project description

The Nosy-Be mangrove conservation project offers participants the opportunity to contribute to the preservation and protection of mangroves.

It aims to restore and protect the region’s mangrove forests by providing training on mangrove ecosystems, collecting data and helping to manage nurseries and plant trees.

After an orientation session, participants will go on field trips to collect data and take part in mangrove tree planting. They will also be involved in a community awareness programme to highlight the importance of mangroves.

Your tasks

As a volunteer, you will work in an inclusive team environment.

Your main tasks will include:

  • planting mangrove seedlings.
  • carrying out maintenance work in the nursery and planting trees on the site
  • collecting data in the field
  • identification of species present in the mangrove channel
  • development of materials for awareness and education programmes: posters, presentations, videos, etc.
  • engaging with the local community and taking part in community outreach activities, such as visits to the local community centre.

Activities are supported and monitored by an expert and are planned depending on the specific needs at the time.

ONCE THERE

Your accommodation

The volunteer house in Nosy Be offers a range of facilities for the comfort of participants. It includes a spacious dining room and two lounges, one on the ground floor and the other on the first floor, where volunteers can socialise. There is also a large balcony where volunteers can relax after hours of project activities.

There is also a fridge that you can use to store your own food and drinks.

The diet consists of three meals a day on weekdays and two a day on weekends. Meals served at the house are family-style and vegetarian, with a combination of Western and Malagasy dishes, mainly rice and vegetables. Kitchen facilities are also available for those who wish to cook or they can choose to eat in local restaurants at their own expense.

For those with specific food preferences, allergies or dietary restrictions, they have the option of complementing the menu with Western foods that suit them better.

Additional Information

Upon arrival, you will take part in an orientation day to familiarise yourself with the local environment and culture.

Your programme will continue as usual from Tuesday and for the rest of the week.

You will work as part of a French-speaking team with French-speaking coordinators and you will share your daily life with volunteers from all over the world. A good command of English is therefore a plus in order to be able to interact with other people.
